An SMS gateway allows a computer application to send or receive Short Message Service (SMS) transmissions to or from a telecommunications network. The SMS gateway will provide one or more SMS APIs to enable an application to submit SMS to the gateway and receive SMS from the gateway. Short Message Peer-to-Peer, SMTP, HTTP, REST and Web Services are examples of SMS APIs. An SMS gateway will typically connect with a mobile network operator's Short Message Service Center (SMSC) for interconnection with a mobile network.
