SS7 SMSCs (Short Message Service Centres) are how SMS are sent between mobiles (P2P SMS) and between applications and mobiles (A2P SMS) and as such are an essential and core part of mobile communications. The Melrose Labs SS7 SMSC is a high capacity SMSC that supports SIGTRAN connections to your network for sending messages from applications to mobiles.

The SMSC supports GSM MAP (Mobile Application Part) to communicate with SS7 networks, primarily using MAP SRIfSM and FSM operations. Application communication with the SS7 SMSC uses the industry-standard SMPP protocol. Using SMPP, messages can be submitted to the SMSC for delivery to mobiles and a delivery receipt returned to the application when the message is delivered or otherwise found to be undeliverable. CDRs are generated for all SMS processed by the SMSC and include IMSI and MSC details for each message.

Performance of the SS7 SMSC can be scaled up to 500 SMS/second, subject to sufficient M2PA or M3UA SIGTRAN link capacity available to your core network. Per-destination mobile queues are used to minimise delivery latency for multiple messages to the same mobile number, as is the case for long SMS or concatenated SMS. Reporting can be used to analyse SMS traffic sent via the SMSC, including a breakdown of traffic by network and by delivery outcome. Monitoring allows for the status of the SMSC to be determined by your operations team.
